"Fast Five" Races Off To Big Box Office Win

Well it sure looks like the fifth time is the charm for the "Fast and Furious" franchise as the latest instalment "Fast Five" easily outpaced to competition to cruise into a massive box office win on its way to having the biggest opening so far this year with an $83.6 million haul.

The Vin Diesel, Paul Walker and Dwayne Johnson actioner more than doubled the previous record opening of $39.2 million for "Rio" - which placed second this week with another $14.4 million.

In third was "Tyler Perry's Madea's Big Happy Family" earning $10.1 million followed by the Reese Witherspoon and R-Pattz effort "Water for Elephants" with $9.1 million and finally in fifth was "Prom" which brought in $5 million.

People Don't Like Water For Elephants

Well of the two new BIG movies that opened over the Easter weekend, the Reese Witherspoon and R-Pattz romantic goobledygook "Water For Elephants" came in... second. Behind the latest Tyler Perry thing-a-ma-jig. But over all, the poorly reviewed film (54% Rotten according to Rotten Tomatoes) eked out only third place as the animated bird flick "Rio" retained its catbird seat at #1 with another $26.8 million. "Tyler Perry's Madea's Big Happy Family" -- honestly, who writes those titles? Oh yeah... -- came in a close second with a $25.8 haul while "Water For Elephants" pulled in $17.5 million to place 3rd. In fourth was the Easter flick "Hop" with another $12.5 million and "Scream 4" absolutely confirmed its big stinking bomb status rounding out the top 5 with a mere $7.2 million.

"Rio" Is #1 At The Box Office After Raking In $40 Million

So "Rio" indeed got the job done. Yup, after leading the Friday box office results, it finished the weekend as the #1 movie in the land after taking in a total of $40 million. Resurrected slasher franchise "Scre4m" perhaps should have stayed buried after managing only $19.3 million, which at least earned it the #2 spot.

Russell Brand's Easter bunny flick "Hop" slipped to third with $11.2 million and former "American Idol" Carrie Underwood's "Soul Surfer," took fourth place after ringing up $7.4 million. And rounding out the top five was "Hanna," which earned another $7.3 million.
